Microsoft announces Office 2016 suite, touch-enabled Office for Windows 10 apps

After describing the next version of Windows on Wednesday, Microsoft on Thursday unveiled the next versions of Office: Office for Windows 10, and the standalone Office 2016 desktop suite.
Microsoft said that the Office for Windows 10 apps, like their counterparts on iOS and Android, would be free to use on phones and small tablets -- no Office 365 subscription required, apparently. And more importantly, they'll be available as part of the Technical Previews of Windows 10 that Microsoft is publishing "in the coming weeks," the company said.

Office 2016 will be likely designed for businesses and cost extra, but Microsoft isn't saying how much. The desktop productivity suite will ship in the second half of this year -- yes, 2015, despite the Office 2016 name.

When Microsoft executives demonstrated Windows 10 for phones at the Wednesday event, they referred to Word as "universal" Word. Julia White, the general manager of Office, also used that terminology in a blog post describing the new apps. And indeed, they look much the same as the superlative Office for iPad Microsoft launched last year.

"They are designed from the ground up to run on Windows 10, built for touch and offer the unmistakable Office experience you know and love," White wrote. "As ‘universal' Office apps, they truly are the same app across device size, providing a consistent way for independent software vendors and developers to extend and integrate with Office apps."

Why this matters: It's time for Windows devices to receive the same Office love as the Android and iOS platforms. One of my questions at this point, however, is how Microsoft will tie to services (if at all) to Office 365. Will O365 strictly be a desktop play?

The same but different

The new Windows 10 apps do appear to be slightly different than their counterparts on other platforms, however. In his presentation, for example, Joe Belfiore showed off how the Office "ribbon" is essentially a separate pane at the bottom of a phone.

Here's how Microsoft describes each of the new touch-enabled Office for Windows 10 apps. You'll notice that in each image, the text and images expand or contract to fill the available space on the phone or tablet. Microsoft calls this "flow".

Word for Windows 10: "Review and mark-up documents, then share your work with others to collaborate in real time. The new Insights for Office feature (powered by Bing) in Read mode brings additional online resources like images, web references and definitions right to you in your reading experience."
In many ways, the core apps on a tablet look very similar to the Office apps on the iPad.

Excel for Windows 10: "Use Excel to create and update spreadsheets and gain new insights as you analyze data and visualize it with charts. And new touch-first controls shine in Excel, you won't even miss your keyboard and mouse when selecting ranges of cells, formatting your pie charts or managing your workbooks."

PowerPoint for Windows 10: "Create and edit beautiful presentations with PowerPoint. Then use Presenter View to prepare and present with confidence, even use Ink Tools to annotate your slides in real time so your audience really knows what you are talking about."

OneNote for Windows 10: "Getting things done with your friends, classmates and colleagues has never been easier with shared notebooks–now with the consistent Office ribbon experience."
One note on OneNote: The Metro version of OneNote lacks the "recording" capability, which the desktop version includes. That's a handy way to type notes in a meeting and record it at the same time -- and the audio is keyed to your notes, and vice versa.

Outlook Mail and Outlook Calendar for Windows 10: "Crafting emails has never been easier or more powerful, with the familiar and rich capability of Microsoft Word built into the authoring experience. Simply insert tables, add pictures and use bullets and color to get your point across. Keep up with your inbox with new touch gestures that help you read, sort, flag and archive your mail."

The last bit refers to the swiping gestures that Microsoft showed off at the Windows Phone presentation.

As for Office 2016 proper, it looks like Microsoft is saving those details for another time. Can we all leave Redmond now, Microsoft, or are there other surprises in store?

iPhone 7

Display

Forgot what Steve Jobs had to say about big screen size because iPhone 7 is going to be bigger. Yes, bigger than the bigger iPhone 6 Plus.  The screen size will add to the viewing pleasure as pictures are expected to be a lot crisper and videos are going to be clearer, actually larger-than-life. Learning the lesson from the clarity and screen issues of iPhone 5, Apple will try to make sure that it does not repeat the mistake twice and gives its users a screen that has superior clarity. Apart from this, rumors regarding the absence of physical home button or inclusion of TouchID sensor are also getting worked up. If this happens, this will enhance the user-friendly touch navigation for users.

Apple has published a patent relating to such displays, which hints at a future iPhone with a display that extends onto the sides of the device, providing interactive or touch sensitive portions that give access to the slide to unlock functionality, music player controls, messaging readout, caller ID, system controls and more.

It's possible that Apple will use different materials to make the iPhone 7 more durable. Before the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were unveiled there was speculation that Apple would use Sapphire glass for the display and Liquidmetal for the chassis.

4G

iPhone 7 will let you enjoy unhindered Internet streaming with support for 4G connectivity currently offered by AT&T and Sprint.

Prices

Given its power-packed processor, innovative apps, best ever under-the-hood specs and crisper display, iPhone 7 is going to be costlier than all of its older siblings.  On an average, you may end up shelling anywhere between $649 and $849 to own this piece of technological beauty. We are completely clueless whether this pricing include a contract fee or not. However, as Android smartphone market is aggressively taking control of world mobile phone market, we can expect from the California-based company to keep the prices competitive enough to lure the larger segment as well as present an attractive buying proposition to fence sitters.

Memory

iPhone 6 Plus has already given a storage options to up to 128GB that makes the microSD card slot absolutely superfluous. Expect the iPhone 7 to set even a better benchmark that most of OEMs would find difficult to beat.  It could be 256GB or even unlimited, you never know!

 Camera

When it comes to the iPhone 7's camera, the latest reports suggest that it could offer a significant improvement over the camera found in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. In fact, it could be the biggest camera jump in the history of the iPhone.

Meet the new app of Google: Google Translate

The new Translate app launched this week, promising instant translation by using phones' cameras to interpret different languages into English. According to Google, this will take us closer 'to a world where language is no longer a barrier.'

The Translate app can decipher French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Russian, and with more languages apparently in the pipeline. Google said the new app should offer better conversation between languages, and is said to allow seamless chat between people. The Guardian's Adam Gabbatt put the app's translation skills to the test in New York City

How to use Google Translate

Translate text instantly

  1. Visit translate.google.com
  2. Select your languages for translation. If you aren't sure what language you're attempting to translate, click the Detect language button. (The accuracy of the automatic language detection increases with the amount of text entered.)
  3. Start typing and the translation will appear instantly

Note: You'll need to have JavaScript enabled to take advantage of our instant translation feature. If you do not have JavaScript, you can click the Translate button to trigger a translation. To turn off instant translations, click Turn off instant translation at the bottom-left of the page.

Read and listen to your translation

If you're translating to a non-Roman (Latin) script, you'll see a button with the symbol Ä next to the translation. Clicking this button will spell out the translation in Roman (Latin) alphabet characters.

For many languages, you may also see a  speaker button near the translated text which you can click to hear a spoken version of your translation.

Dictionary results

When you translate a single word or a common phrase, you may see a simple dictionary underneath the translation indicating parts of speech and possible alternative translations. Next to each dictionary entry, you'll see a corresponding set of reverse translations back into the original language. The bar next to each entry indicates how commonly that particular translation is used on the Web.

Translate words or phrases by voice

Often the easiest way to enter your translation is to speak it, especially if you aren’t sure of the spelling for the word or phrase. Follow the instructions below to translate by voice:

  1. Click the  microphone icon in the input box
  2. Speak the word or phrase you want to translate
  3. Click outside of the input box or on the microphone icon to finish recording

Save your translations in your phrasebook

Click the  star icon next to your translation to add it to your phrasebook. Your phrasebook is synced to your Google Account, so you can have quick and easy access to your saved translations, no matter if you’re accessing Google Translate from a web browser or using the Google Translate Android app.

The big limitation and potential deal-breaker for some people is the fact that the Google Translate app only works when you are online. It is basically an interface that plugs into Google’s servers and so you need a mobile data or Wi-Fi connection to use it. The only caveat is the fact you can tap the drop down menu at the top of the main screen where it says Translate by default and change it to History or Favorites. That gives you access to all of the translations you’ve completed previously, so with some preparation, the app can still be useful with no internet access. Once you have a long history, you might prefer to use the Favorites. You can add translations to your Favorites by tapping the small star at the top right and it will turn yellow to confirm that the entry has been added.

Volkswagen Golf R Touch is a next-generation for a new age of mobility

The Volkswagen Golf R Touch concept car ditches many mechanical controls for smart-phone-like touch screens and sophisticated gesture controls that are enabled by a 3D camera. You can wave the sunroof open and beckon to the seats. The cockpit has three displays: a 12.8-inch high-resolution touch screen for the infotainment system, an 8-inch control center screen with haptic feedback beneath it. The center display also offers touch feedback, so the driver knows when they've actuated a command without necessarily needing to look at it.  and a 12.3 inch active info display  that almost completely eliminate the standard tactile controls, a little bit like Tesla has done in the Model S.  Both the appearances of the displays and the color of the interior lighting can be customized to the driver's liking — not unlike a smartphone,. The entire system is cool, futuristic, and exciting.

Connected Golf

At CES, Volkswagen is also showing the maximum networking potential of the car in the form of the Connected Golf. This e-Golf, which will be equipped with the latest generation (MIB II) infotainment system, will incorporate an enormous range of apps, smartphones and tablets via its progressive interface management system. With online-based functionality, its various features and applications will be organized into several clusters. All of these clusters are implemented in the Connected Golf.

A look at today's App-Connect is particularly exciting. As noted above, Volkswagen is one of the first carmakers to integrate the vast majority of smartphone operating systems in models like the Golf, based on App-Connect. The three underlying software interfaces of App-Connect are Mirror Link™, Android Auto™ (Google®) and CarPlay™ (Apple®). Via these interfaces, the driver and passengers in the car are able to use the many different smartphone apps over the infotainment system.

Autonomous and semi-autonomous driving

Clearly, cars of the future will need to be able to drive autonomously if necessary, a change that will be introduced step by step. Even today, Park Assist by Volkswagen enables semi-automated entry and exit from parking spaces. The car executes the entire steering process for the parking maneuver independently. At CES, Volkswagen is now showing another evolutionary stage of Park Assist: Trained Parking. Here, the car scans a frequently driven path to a parking space via camera, and from that point on it executes the path semi-automatically by computer control. In another evolutionary stage, it will be possible to have the car parked by the driver remotely, using a smartphone to control the car.

Computer-controlled drive systems

Electric mobility is coming into its own. Full electric and hybrid versions of high-volume models have now arrived, and Volkswagen is setting the pace with best-sellers like the Golf. The e-Golf and Golf GTE are the protagonists of a new mobility. These cars would be inconceivable without on-board electronics with computers that control such functions as battery charging and, in the case of the hybrid models, switching between the different drive sources. At CES, Volkswagen is showing, among other things, how electric cars will be able to automatically dock to inductive charging stations and output signals that indicate the battery state-of-charge using the vehicle's exterior lights.

App and smartphone integration

It has now been eight years, to the month, since Apple® introduced its first generation iPhone in San Francisco. Smartphones have irreversibly changed our everyday lives, from the ways we communicate to how we access information. It has long been normal practice to have phones automatically connected to a car's hands-free telephone system via Bluetooth and to have smartphones stream media libraries into car infotainment and sound systems. But now, Volkswagen is taking a significant step forward.

Bill Gates drinks water that was human waste

As part of his humanitarian work, Bill Gates has shown off a machine that turns human waste into potable drinking water--and put his money where his mouth is.

On his blog, Gates Notes, the former Microsoft CEO describes watching piles of feces being processed through a machine, boiled, treated, and then result in a glass of drinking water that he personally drank. The whole process is said to have taken about five minutes.

Water supplies in many poor countries are often contaminated with waste, causing diseases that kill 700,000 children each year and hurt many others. The blog is promoting the Omniprocessor, a Gates Foundation technology that is set to begin a pilot project soon in Dakar, Senegal. It uses a steam engine to make its power needs efficient enough to fuel itself, and even generates extra electricity along with the by-products of drinking water and ash. The processor also has a system of sensors that will allow its creators to help control it from afar during the pilot program.

"Our goal is to make the processors cheap enough that entrepreneurs in low- and middle-income countries will want to invest in them and then start profitable waste-treatment businesses," Gates said. "The processor wouldn’t just keep human waste out of the drinking water; it would turn waste into a commodity with real value in the marketplace. It’s the ultimate example of that old expression: one man’s trash is another man’s treasure."

Amazon snags Woody Allen to direct his first-ever TV series

Amazon Prime will be featuring a television series directed and written by Woody Allen, the company. According to a press release from Amazon, the Untitled Woody Allen Project will include half-hour episodes and already has a full-season order.

Currently dubbed "Untitled Woody Allen Project," there are few details on the show, casting and exact premiere date. Judging by his statement on the series, even Allen doesn't know what's coming next.

Allen is one of the most renowned filmmakers in the world, boasting a filmography that spans more than 40 movies, including "Annie Hall," "Zelig" and "Midnight in Paris." Allen is also a playwright, musician and one of the most recognizable comedians in the world. Still, with all of the work he has done, Allen has never had a television series. This makes the Amazon deal an important one for both Allen and Amazon Studios, the arm that runs original series for the company's Prime Instant Video service.

The Untitled Woody Allen Project comes at a time of success for Amazon, with Transparent taking home the Golden Globe for best comedy or musical television series Sunday night. Signing Allen’s series, Amazon says, continues the company’s plan to release original series.

You think that has more or less successfully to Netflix?

How cars will open in the future #CES2015

KEY FREE

Keyfree actually replaces the traditional key setup with an app that communicates with the car via Bluetooth. As you approach the car, it senses the smart phone and unlocks. The conventional twist ignition is replaced with a “push-to-start button” that requires installation.

The company claims the digital security backing this system is military grade. Users can “share” digital keys with family or friends using the app. The original owner can turn off those shared keys or set restrictions remotely. Users can also track their car when being used by shared drivers—a handy feature for monitoring a teen.

The Keyfree system costs $199, plus the cost of installation. It may also require a bypass of the security system. Keyfree Technologies also suggests that its system of sharing digital keys could make a convenient platform for a car sharing or rental business.
