Ultra-thin 12-inch MacBook

According to rumors, Apple is hard at work on an ultra-thin 12-inch MacBook, which could be the successor to the MacBook Air. The device is said to have an ultra slim design that combines the portability of the 11-inch MacBook Air with the productivity of the larger-screened 13-inch MacBook Air.

Apple's plans to use Broadwell-Y low power Core M processors surfaced in September, along with a rumor indicating Apple could release the ultra-slim MacBook in iPhone color variants.

The new MacBook will reportedly have just two ports: a headphone jack and a USB Type-C Port, alongside a pair of microphones lining the sides of the device.

Like the Retina MacBook Pro, the 12-inch MacBook is said to be incredibly thin, which is an impressive feat as the existing MacBook Air is only 0.68 inches thick at its thickest point. Part of its thin design may be possible due to the inclusion of an Intel     Core M processor, which allows for fanless operation and thus more space for battery cells inside the machine.

A report sourced from the Asian supply chain pointing towards a device carrying a thin, light design with a redesigned trackpad and no fan assembly for silent operation.

Apple may have initially been aiming to release the 12-inch MacBook in late 2014, but continued Broadwell delays appear to have pushed back the company's launch. A September rumor pointed towards a mid-2015 launch, but as Apple already has access to the Core M chips likely slated for use in the device, it could see a release somewhat earlier in the new year, especially if rumors of a January manufacturing ramp are accurate.
